Why Arugam Bay will steal your heart
Arugam Bay is a small village on the south-east coast, and it has become one of the best-known surf destinations in Asia. From around April to October, its long right-hand point break draws surfers from all over the world, while smaller breaks nearby are perfect for beginners.
Even if you don't surf, the atmosphere is infectious. The main road is lined with beach cafés, surf shops, yoga studios and seafood restaurants. Days are spent on the beach or in the waves, and evenings bring sunsets, music and a friendly, sociable crowd.
Arugam Bay is also a great base for adventures. Take a safari in nearby Kumana National Park for leopards, elephants and birdlife, or visit Lahugala, where elephants often gather. Paddle through the mangroves of Pottuvil Lagoon to look for crocodiles and birds.
History lovers will enjoy Muhudu Maha Viharaya, an ancient Buddhist temple by the sea, and the peaceful forest hermitage of Kudumbigala.
