The story

Why Yala National Park will steal your heart

The jeep engine cuts out. Silence, except for the calls of peacocks. Your tracker points to a boulder a few metres away, and there, draped across the warm rock, lies a leopard, its spotted coat glowing in the early sun. It lifts its head, looks straight at you with pale golden eyes, then yawns. Welcome to Yala.

Yala National Park, in the dry south-east of the island, is Sri Lanka's most famous and most visited park. Its mosaic of scrub jungle, open plains, lagoons and huge granite outcrops is home to one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, particularly in Block 1, the most visited area. The Sri Lankan leopard is the island's top predator, and here, without lions or tigers to compete with, it's often seen in the open, even in daylight.

But Yala is far more than leopards. Herds of elephants roam the park, shaggy sloth bears forage for termites and fruit, and mugger crocodiles bask beside the lagoons. Spotted deer, wild boar, water buffalo, mongooses and jackals are everywhere, and the birdlife is spectacular, from painted storks and peacocks to eagles and colourful bee-eaters. The park even meets the ocean along a wild, beautiful coastline.

Safaris run in the early morning and late afternoon, when the animals are most active. You explore in an open jeep with an experienced driver and tracker, bumping along sandy tracks, scanning the rocks and the trees. Every safari is different, and the anticipation is half the fun.

Yala can get busy with jeeps at popular sightings, so we work with trusted, responsible operators who respect the animals and the park's rules. The main section usually closes for part of September and October during the driest period, so we'll plan your visit around it. Combine Yala with the beaches of Tangalle or Mirissa and the hill country for a perfect journey.
