Wildlife Tours in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka packs more wildlife into a small island than almost anywhere on Earth. Track leopards in Yala and Wilpattu, watch hundreds of elephants gather at Minneriya, spot sloth bears, crocodiles and exotic birds, then head out to sea to meet the largest animal ever to have lived, the blue whale. Every safari is in a private jeep with an experienced tracker, and we only include ethical wildlife experiences that put animals first.

Best time to go: February to July is superb for leopards. August and September bring the elephant gathering, and November to April is whale season. Yala usually closes for part of September–October, so we'll plan around it.

Highlights

  • Leopard safaris in Yala and Wilpattu
  • Elephant gathering at Minneriya or Kaudulla
  • Orphaned elephants at the Elephant Transit Home
  • Birdwatching at Bundala wetlands
  • Blue whale watching off Mirissa
  • Endemic wildlife on Horton Plains
