Why Diyaluma Falls will steal your heart
Diyaluma Falls plunges about 220 metres in a single, silver ribbon over a sheer cliff, making it the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Seen from below, beside the road near Koslanda, it's an impressive sight. But the true magic of Diyaluma lies at the top.
Local legend tells of two young lovers, a prince and a princess, who fled into these hills. When the prince fell from the cliff, the gods, moved by the princess's tears, turned them into the waterfall. The name Diyaluma is often translated as 'rushing, luminous water'.
A guided hike of around an hour leads you up through forest and grassland to the upper falls. Here, the river flows over a series of wide rock terraces and pools before it tumbles over the edge. Several natural rock pools sit right on the brink, with cool, clear water and an infinity-style view across the plains far below.
Slipping into these pools, with the world falling away beside you, is an unforgettable experience, and one that many travellers call the highlight of their trip. Between swims, lie on the warm rocks, listen to the rushing water and gaze out over the endless view.
